The Sir John Monash Foundation awards scholarships to outstanding Australians graduating from local universities to allow them to study abroad at the world’s best universities.

Announcing the grant, Innovation Minister Senator Kim Carr said that the Monash Foundation rewarded excellence and that supporting the best minds in Australia would pay dividends in the future.

“With the help of the Australian Government’s grant, this year the Monash Foundation will fund eight scholarships for brilliant young Australians,” Senator Carr said.

“This is a fine program that gives some of our best young minds amazing opportunities. I was delighted today to meet with the new chairperson of the Monash Foundation, Ms Jillian Segal AM. I am sure that Ms Segal will continue the great work of her predecessor General Peter Cosgrove, and carry the foundation into the future.

“Thanks to this support, Monash Scholars will be among the leaders in their chosen fields into the future. I look forward to their pioneering advances, which will benefit the whole community.

“Last year’s scholarships were awarded to outstanding young Australians in fields ranging from the law and economics, to medicine and engineering.

“Our contribution to the Monash Foundation is just one example of the Government’s support for Australian research.

“Investing in science and research is critical to making sure that Australia’s productivity and standard of living continue to increase.

“It is vital that we provide practical support to the research community. That is why we help fund the Monash Foundation scholarships, and why we have invested significantly in our universities and research organisations.”

Applications for the 2011 Monash Foundation scholarships are now open. For more information visit www.monashawards.org

This $900,000 grant was funded in the 2009-10 financial year through Departmental resources, and contributes to Outcome 2 of the 2009-10 Portfolio Budget Statement, within Program 2.1: Investment in Higher Education Research.

Joint media release with the Federal Member for Calwell, the Hon Maria Vamvakinou MP

The Gillard Government will invest $30 million to increase Australia’s research and development capacity through CSL Limited. This investment forms part of a $235 million project that will strengthen our ability to protect Australians from disease.

The project will deliver a major expansion in R&D capacity at CSL Limited’s facility in Broadmeadows, Victoria. It will help ensure that CSL can do medical research that will help save lives, provide lasting benefits to the community, and increase Australia’s readiness to tackle future health threats.

“CSL is a strategically important provider of vaccines, anti-venoms, blood products and diagnostic health products for the Australian community,” Innovation Minister Senator Kim Carr said.

“This investment will help build the infrastructure and develop the capabilities Australian scientists need to create complex, next-generation drugs and deal with future epidemic diseases.”

Federal Member for Calwell, Maria Vamvakinou MP, said the high-value R&D investment would provide a big boost to the northern Melbourne region.

“It will result in over 333 ongoing, highly-skilled jobs and an average of 320 full-time jobs in the construction and commissioning phases,” Ms Vamvakinou said.

Senator Carr said, “CSL plays a unique role in blood fractionation; the development of new vaccines, such as its first-to-market H1N1 vaccine; and the production of anti-venoms for bites that are only inflicted in Australia, for example from brown snakes and funnel-web spiders.

“Australia will benefit from this investment for years to come.”

CSL has a special place in Australia’s history. It started as the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories in 1916 and was privatised as CSL Limited in 1994. CSL delivers a range of products and services that the Australian community has come to rely on.

Funding for this investment has already been provided for in the 2010-11 Budget and in the updated budget projections released in the Treasurer’s Economic Statement of 14 July 2010.

The Australian Government is seeking expressions of interest from eligible higher education institutions for funding under the Collaborative Research Networks (CRN) scheme.

The CRN scheme will provide up to $51 million from 2011 until mid-2013 to help less research-intensive smaller and regional universities strengthen their research capacity by teaming up with other institutions in areas of common interest.

Innovation Minister, Senator Kim Carr, today released the CRN guidelines, saying that the CRN scheme offered a great opportunity to build research partnerships.

“This scheme is all about promoting and supporting Australian based research,” Senator Carr said.

“While successful eligible institutions will receive funding under an agreement with the Commonwealth, this funding may flow to partner institutions for the purpose of facilitating and supporting the collaboration.

“This means that the benefits of the scheme will flow right around Australia.

“The CRN scheme’s flexibility is one of its best features. Under the guidelines, projects may involve existing or emerging areas of research capability, and should be relevant to the participating institutions’ strategic directions.

“Projects need not be limited to specific research fields and may have more than one element with different partner institutions for each element.

“I fully expect that this scheme will encourage and assist some really exciting and cutting-edge research programs across a number of institutions.

“The great thing about these guidelines and the scheme is that the Australian higher education sector has been engaged in their development right from the start. The result is guidelines that match the sector’s needs.

“The closing date for expressions of interest is 16 August. CRN projects will then be selected via a competitive process to support excellent proposals for research capacity building.”

Further information about the program, including the guidelines and template for Expressions of Interest, is available at www.innovation.gov.au.

University of Queensland Business School (UQBS) is partnering with Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, to provide leadership training to key scientists
within the organisation.

The elite professional development program, which includes four tailored courses, will provide training over the next two years for up to 90 CSIRO scientists.

UQBS and CSIRO collaborated closely to develop the practical and highly contextualised program, derived from the School’s highly successful Graduate Certificate in Executive Leadership.

Incorporating live CSIRO case studies have contributed to the personalised nature of the program, according to UQBS Director of Corporate Education, Dr Jim Nyland.

“Each course in the program will be delivered via intensive, five-day residential programs, with case studies and extensive class interaction allowing participants to apply leadership and strategy lessons,” Dr Nyland said.

“CSIRO has been very clear in their desire to train leaders within the organisation who can both develop and execute innovative strategies for achieving operational goals in the short and long term.”

CSIRO is one of the largest and most diverse research agencies in the world, with more than 6500 researchers involved in excess of 740 research activities and works.

With the organisation’s future growth firmly in mind, CSIRO Executive Director, Development, Dr James Bradfield Moody, instigated the partnership with UQBS.

“Strategic and innovative leadership is essential for structuring CSIRO’s development pipeline and ensuring we deliver tangible outcomes for the Australian public and the international community,” Dr Moody said.

“UQ Business School has responded to our needs with a leading edge program, which I believe will transform the way our leading scientists think, and lead to an immediate transformation within the organisation. We’re about to embark on a very exciting journey.”

CSIRO is one of only 12 strategic regional, national and international partners for whom UQBS provides professional development programs, including Laing O’Rourke, Theiss, NZ Telecom and the Queensland Government.

“As one of the premier business schools in the Asia-Pacific, UQ Business School is highly selective of its partner organisations,” Dr Nyland said.

“We saw CSIRO as a very significant and logical partner given their international standing and our expertise in innovation.”

UQBS offers its training program in open format as the Graduate Certificate in Executive Leadership.
